What is the right size tank for goldfish?

The right size tank for Goldfish

Fancy goldfish aren’t just pets; they’re a commitment to providing a biologically necessary habitat. To thrive, a single fancy goldfish requires a minimum of a 20-gallon tank, with an additional 10-20 gallons for each extra fish. This isn’t just a recommendation—it’s essential for their health and survival.

Why a Large Tank Is Non-Negotiable

The Goldfish Waste Problem

Goldfish are surprisingly messy. They lack stomachs, which means food passes through their system quickly and inefficiently. A single fancy goldfish can produce as much waste as several smaller tropical fish. In a small tank, even a well-maintained one, toxic ammonia and nitrites can build up rapidly, burning their gills and stressing their organs. A larger tank dilutes these toxins, giving your filtration system more time to convert them into less harmful nitrates.

Growth Matters

Those tiny goldfish at the pet store? They’re babies. Fancy goldfish naturally grow to be 6-8 inches long, with some varieties reaching over 10 inches. In cramped quarters, their bodies stop growing, but their internal organs don’t. This condition, known as stunting, causes internal damage and dramatically shortens their lifespan. While a well-cared-for goldfish can live for 10 to 20 years, a stunted one might struggle for only 2 to 3 years.

Swimming Space and Behavior

Even with their round bodies and flowing fins, fancy goldfish are active swimmers. They need space to explore, forage, and exercise. Proper space allows them to maintain good circulation, which helps prevent common issues like swim bladder problems that often result from being in a cramped environment.

Filtration Requirements

Because of all the waste they produce, fancy goldfish require robust filtration. You’ll need a filter rated for 2 to 3 times the volume of your tank. It’s much easier for a filter to maintain stable water parameters in a 40-gallon tank than in a 10-gallon tank.

Temperature Stability

Goldfish prefer cooler water, ideally between 65-72°F. A larger volume of water is more resistant to temperature swings, providing a stable environment. Small tanks, however, can heat up and cool down rapidly, causing stress for the fish.

Why Fish Bowls Are Death Traps

Fish bowls are not suitable for any fish, especially fancy goldfish. They offer no filtration, have very little surface area for gas exchange, and experience massive temperature swings. As a result, goldfish in bowls suffer from ammonia poisoning, stunted growth, and constant stress. They are simply not a humane option.

Tank Shape and Final Advice

When choosing an aquarium, opt for a rectangular shape that is longer than it is tall. Goldfish need horizontal swimming space and a wide surface area for optimal oxygen exchange. For instance, a 40-gallon “breeder” tank (36″ x 18″) is a much better choice than a 40-gallon “tall” tank.

The bottom line is simple: your fancy goldfish will either thrive in a proper environment or suffer in cramped conditions. By making the initial investment in a larger tank, you’re setting up your fish for a long, healthy life and giving yourself years of enjoyment watching them display their full personalities.

Skip the starter tank. Buy once, buy right, and give your goldfish the space they biologically require.

Goldfish Minimum Tank Size | Goldfish Forum

“This is several months old but I’m going to answer it anyway because it’s a very commonly asked question and I don’t think it has to be a terribly complicated answer.

I agree with what was said above mostly although I don’t have any experience with ponds.

I would say that slim bodied single-tailed goldfish need 30 gallons per fish, fancy goldfish require 20 gallons per fish.

The other really important thing is that tank shape also matters a longer versus taller tank is always better. So for example, if a person can only afford a 20 gallon tank- a 20 long is better than a traditional 20 gallon tank.

The surface area matters. Especially for fancy goldfish you’ll hear a lot of people say that a 40 gallon breeder tank is very good for a pair. But going by the gallons per fish I think two comet goldfish in a 60+ gallon tank is ok. I think they would grow to a good size and be comfortable assuming proper maintenance.

I think you could have three fancies comfortably, but that would depend a little bit on the breed orandas tend to get a lot bigger and ryukins can be bullies so youd have to do a little research about the type and who you’re going to keep together. But I think even that you could probably do three safely.

The only exception to the 20 gallon per fancy goldfish rule I would say are the extremely fancy goldfish such as celestial eye or bubble eye or pearl scale goldfish- in my opinion they need smaller tanks with extra maintenance. In that case I would say 15 gallons per fish, they have to be watched while you feed them and no decorations, they’re like special needs fish. But that’s a good question and you laid it out really well.

Expert fishkeepers can break any of these rules this is just the advice that I give people who ask me my opinion from my own experience.
